Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Headlight Retrofits from 2014 to LC250

A Toyota Land Cruiser Prado headlight retrofit sounds like a straightforward vehicle-specific job.

In reality, the Prado has used very different headlight layouts across different years and specifications.

A 2014–2016 headlight can support a low-beam-only retrofit or a separate high-beam projector conversion. A 2018–2019 LED headlight keeps its original reflector bowl and decorative trim. Move forward to the LC250 and the situation changes again: we have documented three different headlight configurations, each requiring a different retrofit architecture.

That is why “Toyota Prado” is not enough information when ordering brackets, projectors or matrix retrofit parts.

The actual headlight matters.

2014–2016 Prado: One Headlight, Two Documented Retrofit Paths

The 2014–2016 Prado reference is a good example of why even an older headlight should not be reduced to a single retrofit option.

The documented setup uses a dedicated low-beam bracket, while a separate high-beam metal bracket and decorative shroud kit can be added when a four-projector arrangement is required.

That creates two documented paths:

  • low-beam projector retrofit only;
  • low beam plus the high-beam projector kit for a quad-projector setup.

The same reference also shows that OEM and aftermarket headlamp housings do not necessarily use the same mounting details. The pictured aftermarket housing uses a threaded-rod mounting point, so the mounting method should be confirmed before parts are ordered.

You can see the complete arrangement in our 2014–2016 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado low/high-beam projector retrofit case.

This is the first important lesson in the Prado range:

model year alone still does not tell you everything about the headlight.

2018–2019 Prado: The Original Reflector Bowl Stays

The 2018–2019 LED low-beam headlight takes a very different approach.

Instead of replacing the complete internal reflector structure, the original reflector bowl is retained and reused with a vehicle-specific bracket. The decorative shroud and OEM leveling motor are also restored after the projector installation.

The reflector itself does require preparation. Two raised tabs and the mounting surface are flattened before the bracket is installed, but the reflector bowl is not discarded.

The result is a retrofit that changes the projector system while retaining much of the original headlight structure.

Our 2018–2019 Prado LED low-beam retrofit case shows the reflector preparation, rear-mounted LED projector and OEM parts restoration in detail.

This is very different from the 2014–2016 quad-projector route.

And the difference becomes much larger again with the LC250.

The LC250 Cannot Be Treated as One Headlight

The newer Prado LC250 is where headlight identification becomes especially important.

From the documented cases alone, we already have three different LC250 configurations:

  1. LED reflector-bowl headlamp
  2. High-spec square headlamp
  3. Round headlamp

These are not three names for the same retrofit kit.

They use different brackets, different projector layouts and different internal preparation.

That is why a request such as:

“I need a retrofit kit for a 2024 Prado LC250.”

is still incomplete.

The headlight configuration has to be identified first.

LC250 LED Reflector Bowl: Four Matrix Projectors

The 2024 LC250 LED reflector-bowl version uses a four-projector matrix arrangement.

The documented kit uses two matched pairs of 1.5–1.8 inch matrix projectors, along with a main support bracket, base plates and trim components.

In this configuration, the original reflector-bowl system is replaced by the matrix projector layout. The internal carrier requires controlled preparation, while the upper and lower trim panels and daytime running light are restored during final assembly.

See the 2024 Prado LC250 LED reflector-bowl matrix retrofit for the full reference.

The key point is the architecture:

four compact matrix projectors built around the reflector-bowl version of the headlight.

That architecture should not be assumed for the other LC250 headlights.

LC250 High-Spec Square Headlamp: Three Projectors

The high-spec square-headlamp version uses a completely different layout.

Here, the documented arrangement uses three projectors rather than four.

The outer projector must use a short-tail body to maintain rear clearance. The original adaptive motor is transferred to the new bracket, while the pushrod, lower adjuster, OEM shroud and white trim are retained and restored.

That makes this a much more headlight-specific system.

The 2024 Prado LC250 high-spec square-headlamp retrofit case shows the three-projector carrier and the retained adaptive components.

A four-projector reflector-bowl kit should not be treated as interchangeable with this three-projector square-headlamp setup.

LC250 Round Headlamp: Side-Specific Brackets and DRL Work

The 2024–2025 round-headlamp version is different again.

The documented retrofit uses separate left- and right-side steel brackets, along with clips and adjustment hardware specific to the round-headlamp configuration.

Rear housing clearance has to be created in the highlighted area. A small section of the underside of the DRL trim is also modified, and a compatible DRL shroud is used during final assembly.

The OEM trim opening is then adjusted to suit the finished projector position.

The full 2024–2025 Prado LC250 round-headlamp projector retrofit shows these details.

Again, this is not simply another version of the square-headlamp bracket.

It is its own headlight architecture.

Prado Retrofit Differences at a Glance

Prado Version Original Headlight Configuration Documented Retrofit Direction
2014–2016 Low/high-beam headlamp Low-beam retrofit or optional quad-projector setup
2018–2019 LED low-beam headlight Projector retrofit with OEM reflector bowl retained
2024 LC250 LED reflector-bowl headlamp Four-projector matrix system
2024 LC250 High-spec square headlamp Three-projector matrix system
2024–2025 LC250 Round headlamp Side-specific projector bracket retrofit

The table makes one thing clear:

There is no single “Prado projector retrofit” that applies across the range.

What Should Be Checked Before Ordering?

For retrofit shops and distributors, the easiest way to avoid the wrong bracket or projector combination is to verify the headlight before ordering.

Useful information includes:

  • exact model year;
  • Prado generation;
  • headlight label;
  • front and rear photos;
  • original projector or reflector layout;
  • internal carrier;
  • adjuster or leveling motor;
  • connector and wiring;
  • available rear clearance;
  • photos of the headlight after opening, if available.

For an LC250, the exterior headlight style is especially important because the reflector-bowl, square and round-headlamp configurations use different retrofit systems.

For older Prado headlights, OEM versus aftermarket housing details can matter as well.

The Headlight Determines the Retrofit

Looking across these five Prado cases, the biggest change is not simply the move from older projectors to newer LED or matrix technology.

The bigger change is how vehicle-specific the internal architecture has become.

A 2014–2016 Prado may use separate low- and high-beam retrofit hardware.

A 2018–2019 Prado keeps its reflector bowl and leveling motor.

A 2024 LC250 reflector-bowl headlamp uses four compact matrix projectors.

The high-spec square version uses three.

The round-headlamp version uses its own left/right bracket system and different DRL clearance work.

For retrofit shops, that means the safest workflow is straightforward:

identify the actual headlight first, then match the retrofit system to it.

The vehicle name gets the conversation started. The headlight configuration decides which parts belong in the box.
