A message like this is common:
“I need a projector bracket for a 2022 Toyota Hilux.”
It sounds specific, but for a retrofit supplier it still leaves several important questions unanswered.
The model year helps narrow things down, but it does not confirm the headlight inside the vehicle. Hilux specifications can vary by grade and market, and Toyota itself has offered different headlamp equipment across versions. For example, Toyota Australia has listed different LED headlamp specifications depending on HiLux grade. Toyota Australia
For projector retrofit parts, the actual headlight matters more than the badge on the tailgate.
Our 2021–2025 Toyota Hilux projector retrofit case documents one specific headlight configuration using a vehicle-specific metal bracket, a rear-mounted projector and the original decorative shroud.
Before matching that solution to another vehicle, there are a few things worth checking first.

Start With the Headlight Label
A clear photo of the headlight label is usually more useful than a message containing only the vehicle year.
The label can help separate one headlight version from another and gives the supplier something concrete to compare with an existing retrofit reference.
For the Hilux bracket shown in our case, the documented application is the pictured 2021–2025 projector headlight configuration. It should not automatically be treated as a universal fit for every Hilux sold during those years. citeturn437718search0
When possible, send:
- Model year
- Market or country
- Trim or grade if known
- Headlight label
- Part number if visible
That information is a much better starting point than “Hilux 2023.”
Front and Rear Photos Tell Different Stories
The front of the lamp helps identify the visible headlight design.
The rear is often more useful for retrofit fitment.
A rear photo can show:
- Housing shape
- Access covers
- Connector location
- Available working space
- Existing projector position
- Signs of previous repair or modification
This matters because a bracket can match the internal mounting points and still run into a clearance problem at the rear of the housing.
In the Royalin Hilux reference, rear clearance is one of the items that should be confirmed before installation. citeturn437718search0
A Photo of the Original Projector Helps Confirm More Than Size
Projector diameter alone is not enough.
Two projectors can both be described as “3 inch” while using different:
- Body shapes
- Mounting patterns
- Overall lengths
- Heat-sink dimensions
- Optical center positions
The Hilux case shows a 3-inch square projector format, installed from the rear of the vehicle-specific bracket. citeturn437718search0
That does not mean every 3-inch projector is automatically compatible.
Before ordering, the supplier should be able to compare the projector body and mounting arrangement with the bracket being supplied.
This is one reason we prefer seeing the original projector and carrier instead of matching a bracket from vehicle year alone.
The Internal Carrier Is Often the Most Important Photo
Once the lamp has been opened, a clear photo of the internal carrier can remove a lot of uncertainty.
The carrier shows where the original projector is supported and how a vehicle-specific bracket has to interface with the factory structure.
For the documented Hilux application, the bracket uses a dedicated arrangement with retaining clips, locating pieces and hardware. The projector then mounts from the rear of that bracket. citeturn437718search0
If another Hilux headlight uses a different carrier, those mounting points may no longer match.
That is why a bracket should not be modified simply because the vehicle name is the same.
Check the OEM Shroud Before Assuming It Can Be Reused
The original decorative shroud is retained in the Hilux retrofit shown in our case.
That is useful because it helps preserve the factory appearance of the headlight after the new projector is installed.
But the shroud also affects projector position and clearance.
For this application, the original shroud is secured at the documented points and its inner edge needs to sit correctly around the lens area without excessive pressure. citeturn437718search0
Before ordering parts, a photo of the shroud can help confirm whether:
- The original trim is still present
- It has already been modified
- There is enough space around the replacement projector
- Previous repairs have changed the internal layout
A headlight that has already been modified may need a different approach from an untouched OEM assembly.

Wiring Should Be Identified Before Parts Are Finalized
Mechanical fitment is only one side of the retrofit.
The documented Hilux case also calls for checking vehicle-side high- and low-beam wiring, polarity and projector operation before the headlight is finally sealed. citeturn437718search0
For a supplier, this means it is useful to see:
- Main headlight connector
- Original projector wiring
- Driver or control module, if present
- Any previous wiring modifications
Do not assume wire color or control logic is identical across markets.
Toyota has changed lighting equipment across HiLux grades, which is another reason the exact vehicle configuration should be confirmed rather than inferred from the model name. Toyota Australia
A Simple Photo Set Can Prevent the Wrong Order
For most Hilux enquiries, we would rather receive six useful photos than a long vehicle description.
A practical photo set is:
- Full vehicle or front view
- Headlight front
- Headlight label
- Rear housing
- Original projector and carrier
- Connector and internal trim
If the lamp has already been opened, add close-ups of the mounting area.
This gives enough information to compare the actual headlight with an existing retrofit reference before the shop orders a bracket, projector or related wiring.
Match the Bracket to the Headlight, Not Just the Hilux
A vehicle-specific bracket can save a lot of fabrication work, but only when it is being used with the headlight it was designed around.
The 2021–2025 Toyota Hilux projector retrofit reference currently documents:
- A vehicle-specific metal bracket
- A 3-inch square projector format
- Rear projector mounting
- OEM decorative shroud retention
- Specific bracket orientation and hardware
- Wiring and polarity verification
- Rear-clearance checks
Other years, regional headlights, internal carriers and previously modified housings are not automatically confirmed by that reference. citeturn437718search0
For retrofit shops and distributors, sending the headlight label and a few clear photos before ordering is usually the quickest way to confirm whether the existing Hilux bracket solution is the right one.
It is a small step, but it can prevent a much larger problem once the headlight is already open.
