How Retrofit Shops Can Match Projectors and Brackets for Toyota 86 / GT86 / FR-S Headlights

A customer sends you a message:

“I have a Toyota 86. Which projector fits?”

For a retrofit shop, that is not really enough information to answer the question.

The Toyota 86, GT86 and Scion FR-S share the same basic vehicle family, but the headlights changed across different years, markets and specifications. Some cars use halogen headlights, some use factory xenon systems, and later versions introduced LED lighting.

Even within the same generation, the projector mounting structure can be different.

That is why we prefer to match retrofit parts from the actual headlight, not only from the vehicle name.

For shops that handle several customer cars every month, this approach also reduces trial fitting, wrong brackets and unnecessary shipping back and forth.

Toyota 86 GT86 FR-S projector and bracket matching guide

Start with the exact vehicle, but don't stop there

The vehicle information is still useful.

We normally start with:

  • model
  • year
  • market
  • LHD or RHD

That gives us a general direction.

But the next step is more important: identify the headlight itself.

A 2014 GT86 in one market may not have the same lamp configuration as another 2014 car elsewhere. A Scion FR-S may have a halogen or HID setup. A later Toyota 86 may use an LED-based headlight with a different internal structure.

If the shop is not sure which version it has, the Toyota 86 / GT86 headlight type guide is a useful place to begin.

Ask for photos before asking for part numbers

Part numbers are useful when they are available, but good photos are often faster.

For an 86 / GT86 / FR-S retrofit, we normally want to see:

  • complete front view of the headlight
  • rear housing
  • headlight label
  • original projector
  • projector mounting points
  • connector and wiring
  • available space behind the projector

If the housing has already been opened, one clear photo of the projector carrier can save a lot of guessing.

This is especially useful when a car has had previous repair work or aftermarket headlights installed. The vehicle may be original, but the lamp may not be.

Identify the original projector

The original projector tells you a lot about the retrofit.

In our early 2012–2015 Toyota 86 / GT86 / Scion FR-S projector retrofit case, the factory xenon headlight uses an RX350-type projector.

That gives us a known starting point.

We know the original mounting arrangement, the available position inside the housing and how the replacement bracket relates to the factory projector location.

The later headlight is different.

Our 2016–2020 Toyota 86 / GT86 projector retrofit case uses a different bracket structure and a front-mounted replacement projector.

Same broad vehicle family.

Different retrofit solution.

This is why a bracket should never be selected only because the product title says “Toyota 86.”

Check the mounting pattern

Once the original projector is identified, the next question is how it is mounted.

Look at:

  • number of mounting points
  • bolt spacing
  • bracket orientation
  • projector installation direction
  • optical center
  • relationship to the original shroud

Some headlights allow a fairly direct bracket replacement.

Others require a more specific adapter arrangement.

The important point is that the replacement projector should sit in the correct position without forcing the bracket or changing the optical center unnecessarily.

A bracket that technically bolts in but leaves the projector too high, too low or too far forward is not a good match.

Rear clearance matters more than many people expect

Projector size is not only about the lens diameter.

The body behind the lens can be just as important.

Before confirming a projector, check the space available behind the bracket.

Depending on the projector design, you may need room for:

  • heat sink
  • cooling fan
  • wiring
  • bulb holder
  • solenoid connector
  • rear cover

A projector can fit the mounting holes perfectly and still prevent the dust cover from closing.

This is one of the easiest problems to avoid if the shop sends a rear housing photo and basic clearance measurement before ordering.

Check the shroud and internal trim

The projector does not sit alone inside the lamp.

The factory shroud, decorative trim and lens opening also need to work with the replacement unit.

If the projector lens sits too far forward, it may touch the shroud.

If it sits too far back, the finished headlight may look wrong from the front.

For OEM-style retrofit work, maintaining the original visual position is often just as important as making the bracket fit.

That is why we normally look at the headlight as a complete assembly rather than treating the projector and bracket as separate products.

Wiring should be checked before the housing is closed

Mechanical fitment is only half of the job.

The shop also needs to know how the new projector will work with the vehicle.

Check:

  • low-beam power
  • high-beam signal
  • polarity
  • connector type
  • ballast or LED driver
  • warning or fault behavior
  • whether additional control hardware is required

On the early factory xenon configuration in our Case, the original vehicle power can be retained without an additional decoder.

On the later 2016–2020 reference, decoder requirements should be confirmed on the actual vehicle rather than assumed.

That difference is another good reason not to sell one “complete Toyota 86 retrofit kit” without identifying the lamp first.

Don't forget LHD and RHD

This is especially important for shops buying retrofit parts internationally.

Toyota 86 and GT86 cars are found in both left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive markets.

The low-beam pattern needs to match the market where the car will actually be driven.

A projector that physically fits the bracket is not automatically the correct projector if the beam pattern is wrong for the vehicle.

For distributors and retrofit businesses serving multiple countries, it is better to include LHD/RHD information in the first inquiry rather than correcting it after the parts arrive.

A simple matching checklist for retrofit shops

For most Toyota 86 / GT86 / FR-S inquiries, this information is enough to start:

Vehicle

  • Model
  • Year
  • Market
  • LHD or RHD

Headlight

  • OEM or aftermarket
  • Halogen, xenon or LED
  • Headlight label
  • Front and rear photos

Projector

  • Original projector photo
  • Mounting points
  • Approximate rear clearance

Electrical

  • Connector photo
  • Low/high beam wiring
  • Existing ballast or driver

Retrofit goal

  • Replace aging projector
  • Improve beam performance
  • Change to LED projector
  • Keep OEM appearance
  • Build a complete retrofit package

This is much more useful than simply sending a VIN or saying “Toyota 86 projector needed.”

Why this matters for shops and distributors

For an individual owner, ordering the wrong bracket is frustrating.

For a retrofit shop or distributor, repeating that mistake across several customer cars becomes expensive.

Wrong fitment means more installation time, more communication and sometimes another international shipment.

A simple identification process at the beginning usually costs far less than solving compatibility problems later.

It also makes future orders easier.

Once a shop has confirmed one headlight configuration and documented it properly, the next identical car becomes much easier to handle.

That is one reason we keep real retrofit cases rather than relying only on general application lists.

Match the headlight, not just the car

The Toyota 86 / GT86 / FR-S platform is a good example of how vehicle-specific retrofit work should be approached.

The model and year narrow the search.

The actual headlight confirms the solution.

Once the housing, original projector, mounting points, rear clearance, wiring and LHD/RHD requirement are clear, it becomes much easier to match the correct projector and bracket.

If you are still deciding whether the car needs a projector retrofit or a complete headlight replacement, the Toyota 86 / GT86 headlight upgrade guide covers the broader upgrade options.

For retrofit shops and distributors, the most useful first message is not:

“Do you have a bracket for Toyota 86?”

It is:

“This is the year, market and headlight we have. Here are the projector, mounting and connector photos.”

That gives both sides something real to work with.
