At first glance, a 2023 Toyota RAV4 matrix headlight retrofit may look like another projector replacement job.
Once the headlight is opened, it becomes clear that this setup is different.
The mid/high-spec RAV4 headlight documented in our retrofit reference uses two compact projectors inside each headlight, rather than one conventional 3-inch projector.
That changes the bracket, projector size, wiring and even the way the surrounding trim needs to be checked during final adjustment.
For shops working on this headlight, it is better to treat the system as a complete retrofit kit rather than trying to match one part at a time.

Why Does This RAV4 Use Two Projectors Per Headlight?
The documented 2023 mid/high-spec configuration uses a dual-projector arrangement.
Each headlight is fitted with:
- Two compact bi-beam projectors
- One vehicle-specific bracket frame
- Retaining clips
- Decorative plates
- Decoder interface
- Reused light-guide and trim components
The supported projector format in this reference is approximately 1.5–1.8 inches, which is much smaller than the 3-inch square projectors used in some other RAV4 retrofit applications. citeturn857213view0
This is an important distinction.
A shop should not assume that a projector solution used on a 2020 or 2023–2024 RAV4 headlight will also fit this matrix configuration.
The internal carrier is different, so the retrofit approach is different too.
The Bracket Is Designed Around the Dual-Projector Layout
With two projectors sitting side by side, bracket geometry becomes especially important.
The bracket needs to hold both projectors in the correct position while also leaving enough room for:
- Adjustment
- Decorative trim
- Light-guide parts
- Wiring
- Rear housing clearance
The case uses a left/right bracket system designed around the pictured 2023 RAV4 mid/high-spec matrix headlight.
The supplied retaining clips also need to be installed in the correct positions before the projectors are fitted.
If one clip or bracket point is installed incorrectly, the problem may only become obvious later when the trim is reinstalled.

Why Not Use a Standard 3-Inch Projector?
This is probably the first question many retrofit shops will ask.
A larger projector may offer good performance in another application, but fitment is determined by the original headlight structure.
In this RAV4 matrix configuration, the reference is built around two compact 1.5–1.8 inch bi-beam projectors per headlight. citeturn857213view0
Trying to replace the layout with one large projector would involve much more than changing the bracket.
You would also have to reconsider:
- Optical position
- Trim opening
- Light-guide clearance
- Rear depth
- Adjustment range
- Overall appearance inside the headlight
For repeatable professional retrofit work, matching the correct projector format to the existing headlight architecture is usually the cleaner approach.
Decoder Wiring Needs to Be Verified
The electrical side is another reason this retrofit should not be treated as a simple mechanical installation.
The documented kit uses a compatible decoder interface.
The reference identifies low-beam positive, low-beam negative and signal circuits, but it also gives an important warning:
Do not connect the decoder only by matching wire colors.
The actual vehicle connector and signal circuits should be tested before permanent connections are made. citeturn857213view0
For a workshop, this is especially important if the vehicle comes from a different region or the headlight has been previously repaired.
A connector can look familiar while the actual wiring arrangement is different.
Trim and Light-Guide Clearance Matter More Than They Look
One of the less obvious parts of this retrofit is restoring the factory trim after the new projectors are installed.
The original light-guide and decorative areas need to sit correctly around the new dual-projector setup.
During the documented installation, only necessary interference areas are trimmed, and the light guide is then restored before final on-vehicle adjustment. citeturn857213view0
This is where a retrofit can look finished on the workbench but still need correction once the headlight is installed on the vehicle.
Before resealing, check:
- Projector adjustment range
- Surrounding trim clearance
- Light-guide clearance
- Decorative plate position
- Wiring movement
- Beam alignment
Small contact points can restrict adjustment later.
What Does the Installation Sequence Look Like?
The actual case follows a fairly logical process:
1. Open the Headlight
Protect the sealing channel and reusable light-guide parts.
2. Remove the Original Projector and Trim
Keep the parts that will be reused.
3. Fit Both Compact Projectors to the Bracket
Install the correct clips and confirm projector position.
4. Install the Complete Bracket
Secure it at the verified mounting points.
5. Restore the Decorative Plates
Check that the openings around both projectors look even.
6. Reinstall the Light Guide and Test on the Vehicle
Trim only where necessary and verify adjustment clearance before final sealing.
The full sequence, including installation photos, is available in the complete 2023 RAV4 Matrix Retrofit Installation Reference.
What Should a Shop Confirm Before Ordering?
This retrofit reference applies to the pictured 2023 RAV4 mid/high-spec matrix headlight configuration.
Before ordering, send or check:
- Model year
- Headlight label
- Front and rear headlight photos
- Internal projector area
- Connector
- Original carrier
- Adjustment-clearance area
Do not assume the same kit automatically fits:
- Low-spec headlights
- Non-matrix headlights
- Other model years
- Different internal carriers
- Projectors outside the stated size range
That may sound cautious, but it is much easier to confirm the headlight before ordering than to solve a bracket mismatch after the lamp has been opened.
A Different RAV4 Headlight Needs a Different Retrofit Approach
This 2023 matrix case is a good example of why we do not treat “Toyota RAV4” as one universal headlight application.
The vehicle may be the same model, but the internal headlight structure can change significantly between versions.
For this configuration, the key is not simply choosing a brighter projector.
It is matching the dual-projector layout, bracket, decoder and trim clearance as one complete system.
If your headlight matches the configuration shown here, review the actual installation before selecting parts:

If the headlight looks different, send the label and internal photos first. A few clear pictures usually make compatibility much easier to confirm.
