If you are working on a 2023 or 2024 Toyota RAV4, it is easy to assume that choosing a headlight retrofit kit is simply a matter of matching the vehicle year.
It isn't.
We have two RAV4 retrofit references from this period that use very different internal solutions:
- A dual compact projector setup for the 2023 mid/high-spec matrix headlight
- A 3-inch square projector setup using a vehicle-specific Hella-style bracket for another 2023–2024 mid/high-spec headlight configuration
Both belong to the RAV4 family. Both are projector retrofits.
But the brackets, projector sizes and installation details are different.
So the first question should not be:
“Which projector is better?”
It should be:
“Which headlight do I actually have?”

The 2023 Matrix Setup Uses Two Compact Projectors
The first solution is for the 2023 RAV4 mid/high-spec matrix headlight configuration shown in our reference.
Instead of one large projector, the bracket supports two compact bi-beam projectors in each headlight.
The reference uses:
- Two projectors per headlight
- 1.5–1.8 inch bi-beam projector format
- Vehicle-specific dual-projector bracket
- Retaining clips
- Decorative plates
- Compatible decoder
- Original light-guide restoration
That makes it a very different installation from a conventional single-projector conversion.
You can see the complete structure and installation sequence in the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Matrix Projector Retrofit Case.
One detail worth paying attention to is clearance.
After the two projectors and decorative components are installed, the surrounding trim and light guide still need enough room for final adjustment. This is why the reference includes an on-vehicle interference and aiming check before the job is considered finished.
The 2023–2024 Hella Bracket Setup Is Different
The second RAV4 reference uses a much more familiar projector format:
one 3-inch square-format projector mounted with a vehicle-specific bracket.
This solution is documented for the pictured 2023–2024 mid/high-spec RAV4 headlight configuration.
The main components include:
- Left/right Hella-style bracket system
- 3-inch square projector
- Directional bracket components
- Decoder interface
- OEM butyl-sealed headlight housing
- Required mounting hardware
The important word here is square.
A projector described only as “3-inch” should not automatically be considered compatible. The mounting pattern and body format still need to match the bracket.
See the actual bracket orientation and projector installation in the 2023–2024 Toyota RAV4 Hella Projector Retrofit Case.

So Which Retrofit Should You Choose?
This is where the answer is a little different from a normal product comparison.
You should not choose between these two solutions based only on beam preference, price or projector size.
The original headlight configuration comes first.
| Check | 2023 Matrix Reference | 2023–2024 Hella Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Projectors per headlight | Two | One |
| Projector format | 1.5–1.8" compact bi-beam | 3" square |
| Bracket type | Dual-projector frame | Hella-style bracket |
| Decoder | Required in documented setup | Interface depends on setup |
| Key fitment concern | Trim / adjustment clearance | Bracket orientation / projector format |
| Same bracket? | No | No |
If the original headlight has the dual-projector matrix structure, the Hella-style 3-inch bracket is not a substitute.
Likewise, if the headlight uses the 3-inch square-projector mounting structure shown in the Hella reference, ordering the compact dual-projector matrix kit would make little sense.
Why Vehicle Year Alone Is Not Enough
This is a useful example of a broader problem in headlight retrofit work.
A customer might send a message saying:
“I need a projector bracket for a 2023 RAV4.”
That still leaves an important question unanswered.
Which 2023 RAV4 headlight?
Before ordering, ask for:
- A clear front photo of the headlight
- Headlight label or part number
- Rear housing photo
- Original projector area
- Internal carrier or bracket area
- Connector photos if wiring needs to be matched
If the headlight is already open, internal photos are especially useful.
A few photos at the beginning are much easier to deal with than discovering the wrong bracket after the headlight is already on the workbench.
For Retrofit Shops, Think in Headlight Configurations
When a workshop handles many vehicle applications, it is tempting to build the parts list around:
Brand → Model → Year
That is a good starting point.
For projector retrofit work, however, a better final step is:
Brand → Model → Year → Headlight configuration → Internal structure
These two RAV4 cases show exactly why.
The vehicles are close in model year, yet the correct retrofit solution can change from two compact projectors to one 3-inch square projector.
The goal is not to find the “best RAV4 projector.”
The goal is to match the right projector and bracket to the headlight sitting in front of you.
Compare the Two RAV4 Retrofit References
If you are not sure which configuration you have, compare your headlight with both installation references:
2023 Toyota RAV4 Mid/High-Spec Matrix Projector Retrofit
2023–2024 Toyota RAV4 Mid/High-Spec Hella Projector Retrofit
If the structure still does not match, send the headlight label together with front, rear and internal photos before ordering the bracket or projector.
For this type of retrofit, identifying the headlight correctly is more useful than guessing from the model year.
