2022 LC300 High-Spec vs Mid/Low-Spec Headlights

A customer asking for a “2022 LC300 matrix retrofit kit” has given useful information.

But not enough.

For the 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser LC300, the high-spec and mid/low-spec headlights we have documented use very different internal structures.

The mid/low-spec reference uses a complete multi-projector carrier that can support two documented matrix layouts.

The high-spec version uses a separate three-projector carrier built around the original rear-adjuster layout.

That means the difference is not simply trim level on the vehicle.

It changes the bracket, projector arrangement, mounting hardware and the checks that need to be made before installation.

The Two Headlights Do Not Start From the Same Structure

The easiest mistake is to think:

“They are both 2022 LC300 headlights, so the retrofit bracket should be similar.”

The documented cases show otherwise.

The LC300 mid/low-spec matrix retrofit is built around a complete replacement carrier with projector brackets, shroud panels, spacers and trim components.

The LC300 high-spec matrix retrofit uses a dedicated three-projector carrier that has to match the original rear-adjuster positions.

So before discussing projector size or wiring, the first job is identifying which headlight is actually on the vehicle.

Mid/Low-Spec LC300: Two Documented Matrix Layouts

The mid/low-spec case is the more configurable of the two.

The documented kit supports:

  • five bi-LED projectors; or
  • three bi-LED projectors plus two independent high beams.

That detail matters.

This should not simply be described as a “five-projector retrofit,” because the Case supports two layouts.

The original reflector-bowl assembly is removed to expose the mounting area for the new carrier.

The supplied system then uses:

  • main matrix carrier;
  • projector brackets;
  • metal shroud panels;
  • spacers;
  • fasteners;
  • trim components.

One shaped plastic block also has a specific orientation and should not be installed upside down.

This is a fairly complete internal conversion rather than a simple projector replacement.

High-Spec LC300: A Fixed Three-Projector Architecture

The high-spec headlight uses a much more specific three-projector structure.

The bracket shown in our Case accepts three 1.5–1.8 inch projector bodies.

More importantly, the carrier has to match the original rear-adjuster layout.

Before disassembly, the rear adjuster positions should be compared with the documented reference.

The retrofit also includes several headlight-specific details:

  • driver-side hardware is replaced with supplied parts;
  • one mounting point uses a taller black spacer;
  • two lower carrier points reuse OEM shroud mounting locations;
  • two upper points are secured using cable ties;
  • a highlighted housing section may require trimming to prevent interference.

These are not details that can be carried over automatically from the mid/low-spec headlight.

The Projector Count Is Only Part of the Difference

At first glance, the two systems can be summarized like this:

LC300 Headlight Documented Projector Layout
Mid/Low-Spec Five bi-LED or three bi-LED + two independent high beams
High-Spec Three 1.5–1.8 inch projectors

But projector count alone does not explain the retrofit.

The more important difference is how each headlight supports those projectors.

The mid/low-spec system replaces the reflector-bowl structure with a complete matrix carrier and supplied trim.

The high-spec system replaces the original three-projector carrier while continuing to work around the existing rear-adjuster and OEM mounting architecture.

That is why two kits designed for the same LC300 model year can look completely different.

Wiring Also Needs to Be Treated Differently

The mid/low-spec Case specifically calls for verification of four signal wires:

  • low-beam positive;
  • low-beam negative;
  • high-beam positive;
  • high-beam negative.

These signals need to be confirmed before connecting the new matrix system.

The important point here is not to rely on assumptions or wire colors alone.

The actual headlight and vehicle wiring should be tested.

The high-spec reference focuses more heavily on carrier fitment, rear adjusters, spacer placement and housing clearance.

That does not mean electrical verification can be skipped.

It simply reflects that the two Cases have different technical priorities.

Why Rear Adjusters Matter on the High-Spec Headlight

The high-spec headlight deserves particular attention around the rear adjusters.

The documented carrier is designed around a specific OEM adjuster layout.

If the rear of the customer's headlight does not match the reference, that is a warning sign that the supplied carrier should not automatically be assumed to fit.

This is exactly why photos of the rear housing are useful before ordering.

A front photo may tell us that the vehicle is an LC300.

A rear photo can tell us whether the internal mounting and adjustment layout is the one the bracket was designed around.

Mid/Low-Spec Trim Is Part of the Retrofit System

Another difference is the amount of supplied trim used in the mid/low-spec conversion.

The kit includes metal shroud panels that mount to the main carrier in defined positions.

These panels are not just decorative pieces added at the end.

They form part of the finished internal assembly around the multiple projectors.

That makes this setup structurally and visually different from the high-spec three-projector carrier, which works more directly with the original headlight mounting architecture.

High-Spec and Mid/Low-Spec Should Be Confirmed Before Ordering

For a retrofit shop, a customer message such as:

“2022 LC300, need matrix kit.”

should trigger a few follow-up checks.

Useful information includes:

  • headlight label;
  • front photo;
  • rear housing photo;
  • internal carrier;
  • original reflector or projector arrangement;
  • rear adjuster positions;
  • wiring connectors;
  • projector dimensions if already selected.

If it is a mid/low-spec headlight, the complete matrix carrier reference should match the original structure.

If it is a high-spec headlight, the three-projector high-spec carrier reference and rear adjuster layout need to be confirmed.

The vehicle model and year are only the first part of that process.

The Right Question Is Not Which Kit Is Better

There is no useful answer to:

“Is the high-spec matrix kit better than the mid/low-spec kit?”

They are not competing solutions for the same headlight.

They exist because the original headlights are different.

The mid/low-spec reference uses a configurable multi-projector matrix carrier.

The high-spec reference uses its own three-projector architecture.

One uses a more complete carrier-and-trim conversion.

The other depends heavily on the original rear-adjuster and mounting layout.

For retrofit shops and distributors, the practical rule is simple:

confirm the LC300 headlight specification before confirming the retrofit kit.

The year gets you close.

The actual headlamp tells you which parts belong there.
