2016–2020 Toyota 86 / GT86 Projector Retrofit: What to Check Before Upgrading

The later first-generation Toyota 86 / GT86 looks familiar, but the headlight is not just an updated version of the earlier car.

That is the first thing worth keeping in mind before choosing a projector or bracket.

The 2017 model update brought LED front lighting to the U.S.-market Toyota 86, and the internal arrangement in later headlights can be quite different from the earlier xenon setup.

So if you have already worked on a 2012–2015 86, GT86 or FR-S, it is better not to assume the same parts or installation method will carry over.

For the 2016–2020 headlight shown in our retrofit reference, the replacement projector uses a front-mounted bracket arrangement, along with dedicated left/right brackets and accessory clips.

Start by confirming the headlight version

The first step is still identification.

This matters because the 2016–2020 range includes different markets and headlight configurations. Toyota officially introduced standard LED front headlamps on the U.S.-market 2017 Toyota 86, which marked a clear change from the earlier Scion FR-S setup. You can see that in Toyota's official 2017 Toyota 86 model information.

That does not mean every 2016–2020 GT86 around the world has the same internal headlight.

Before ordering retrofit parts, check:

  • vehicle year
  • market
  • LHD or RHD
  • headlight label
  • rear housing
  • original projector
  • electrical connector
  • whether the housing is OEM or aftermarket

If you are still trying to work out which factory lighting system is on the car, the Toyota 86 / GT86 headlight type guide is a better place to start.

The later retrofit uses a different mounting arrangement

The biggest practical difference in our later case is the projector mounting method.

The 2016–2020 Toyota 86 / GT86 projector retrofit case uses a vehicle-specific left/right bracket set with accessory clips. The replacement projector is installed from the front of the bracket rather than from the rear.

That may sound like a small detail, but it changes the way the whole retrofit is prepared.

The bracket position, projector body and front opening clearance all need to work together.

This is one of the reasons we would not reuse an early 2012–2015 bracket simply because the headlight belongs to the same vehicle family.

The passenger side needs extra preparation

In the documented later headlight, the passenger-side bracket requires some preparation before the new projector assembly is installed.

A specific bracket section is removed and the supplied accessory clips are installed in the shown positions.

This is not the kind of detail that should be generalized to every Toyota 86 headlight.

It belongs to this specific retrofit arrangement.

For a shop, the important lesson is simple: check the bracket instructions and actual headlight before cutting or removing anything.

Once material has been removed from a factory carrier, it is much harder to correct a wrong assumption.

Open the housing carefully

The headlight shown in the case uses factory hot-melt sealant.

That usually makes the lamp more serviceable than a hard-sealed housing, but controlled heat is still important.

The lens, sealing channel and clips should be protected while the headlight is opened.

Try to keep the channel as clean and intact as possible, because the quality of the final reseal depends on it.

This is easy to overlook when attention is focused on the projector itself.

A good retrofit with a poor reseal is still a bad result.

Remove the original projector before judging fitment

Once the housing is open, remove the factory projector and inspect the space around it.

This is the point where you can properly judge:

  • bracket seating
  • front opening clearance
  • projector depth
  • wiring path
  • cooling space
  • rear cover clearance

The projector body should not contact the surrounding housing or decorative parts.

For this later setup, the replacement projector is front-mounted to the bracket. The optical center and lens position should be checked before everything is tightened.

Small positioning errors at this stage can become very obvious once the beam is projected onto a wall.

Why the 2012–2015 solution should not be copied

The earlier factory-xenon 86 / GT86 / FR-S case uses a different arrangement.

That earlier retrofit uses an RX350-type original projector and a rear-mount installation method. The later reference uses a front-mounted replacement projector and different bracket hardware.

If you want to compare the two directly, the 2012–2015 Toyota 86 / GT86 / Scion FR-S projector retrofit case shows how different the earlier housing is.

The cars belong to the same first generation, but the retrofit work is not the same.

That is exactly why year ranges should be treated as a starting point rather than the final compatibility check.

Do you need a decoder?

This is one area where it is better not to give a universal answer.

In the later 2016–2020 Case, decoder requirements are not confirmed as a blanket rule.

The actual vehicle, projector and electrical behavior need to be tested.

That means checking the low beam, high beam and any relevant warning or fault behavior before the housing is resealed.

If a decoder or control interface is required, it should be selected based on the actual vehicle response rather than added automatically.

For retrofit shops, that saves both time and unnecessary components.

Check the projector as part of a complete system

A bracket fitting the housing is only part of the job.

The replacement projector also needs to suit:

  • the front-mount pattern
  • optical center
  • body size
  • available depth
  • cooling arrangement
  • beam requirement
  • LHD or RHD application

A projector that physically bolts to the bracket may still be a poor choice if its body interferes with the housing or its optical position does not line up correctly.

This is why we normally look at the projector, bracket and headlight as one system rather than three separate parts.

Test before resealing

Before closing the lamp, power everything on.

Check:

  • low beam
  • high beam
  • projector alignment
  • cutoff rotation
  • electrical behavior
  • rear clearance
  • any warning or fault messages

It is much easier to correct these things while the headlight is still open.

Once the lamp has been resealed and installed back on the car, even a small problem means repeating a large part of the job.

After installation, the beam should also be aimed properly on the vehicle.

This retrofit is mainly about matching the right headlight

The later Toyota 86 / GT86 is a good example of why projector retrofit work should begin with the actual lamp rather than a broad vehicle-year listing.

The 2017 facelift brought major lighting changes, and the later headlight shown in our Case uses a different mounting method from the earlier xenon version.

For the specific 2016–2020 reference, the important points are:

  • dedicated left/right bracket set
  • passenger-side preparation
  • accessory clips
  • front-mounted replacement projector
  • hot-melt housing
  • decoder requirement verified on the actual vehicle

If you are still deciding whether a projector retrofit is the right route at all, the Toyota 86 / GT86 headlight upgrade guide covers the broader options.

For a retrofit shop, though, the working rule is much simpler:

Confirm the headlight first, then match the bracket, projector and electrical setup around that exact configuration.
