How to Upgrade the Projectors in a 2012–2015 Toyota 86 / GT86 / Scion FR-S Xenon Headlight

The early Toyota 86 / GT86 / Scion FR-S is old enough now that many of these cars have already gone through several rounds of modification.

Wheels, suspension and exhaust usually get the attention first. Headlights tend to come later, often when an owner notices that the original low beam no longer feels as useful as it once did.

On some factory xenon versions, replacing the entire headlight is not the only option.

If the housing is still in good condition, the original projector can be removed and a newer projector installed using a vehicle-specific bracket.

That sounds straightforward, but this is one of those jobs where identifying the original headlight first matters more than the badge on the car.

2012–2015 Toyota 86 GT86 Scion FR-S projector retrofit

Start by confirming the factory xenon headlight

The 2012–2015 period includes several Toyota 86 / GT86 / Scion FR-S configurations depending on market and specification.

So this retrofit should not be treated as a universal solution for every early 86-family headlight.

The real reference we use here is a factory xenon headlamp with an RX350-type original projector.

If the car has a halogen housing, aftermarket replacement headlight or a headlight that has already been modified, the mounting arrangement may be different.

Before ordering parts, it is worth checking:

  • the headlight label
  • the rear housing
  • the original projector
  • the electrical connector
  • whether the lamp is OEM or aftermarket

If you are not sure which headlight version you have, our Toyota 86 / GT86 headlight type guide explains the main halogen, xenon and LED configurations first.

The original projector in this headlight

In our documented retrofit reference, the factory projector is identified as an RX350 unit. The same case also confirms a factory hot-melt-sealed housing and OEM xenon power supply. :chatgpt-content-reference{index="0"}

That information is useful because it tells us what we are actually replacing.

It also prevents a common mistake: choosing a replacement projector first and only later discovering that the bracket, optical center or rear clearance does not line up with the original headlight.

For this configuration, the projector and bracket should be considered together.

The bracket needs to hold the replacement projector securely while keeping the optical center and adjustment range in the correct position.

Opening the housing

The headlight shown in the reference uses factory hot-melt sealant. :chatgpt-content-reference{index="1"}

That generally makes the housing more serviceable than a hard permaseal-type lamp, but it still needs to be opened carefully.

The goal is not simply to get the lens off.

The sealing channel needs to remain usable so the housing can be closed again properly after the retrofit.

Controlled heat is preferable to forcing the lens apart. The lens edge, clips and sealing channel should all be protected during the process.

Once the housing is open, the original projector can be removed and the mounting area inspected.

This is also the point where any previous repair work becomes obvious. If the lamp has been opened before, the sealant or mounting points may no longer match the original condition.

Using a vehicle-specific bracket

The bracket in this retrofit is designed around the pictured 2012–2015 xenon headlight.

After the original RX350 projector is removed, the replacement projector is assembled with the dedicated bracket before being installed back into the housing.

An RX350 adapter may also be used when the selected replacement arrangement requires it, but it is not something that should automatically be added to every installation. :chatgpt-content-reference{index="2"}

What matters is the final relationship between:

  • projector body
  • bracket
  • mounting holes
  • optical center
  • rear clearance

If those points are correct, the retrofit becomes much more predictable.

This version installs from the rear

One useful detail in this particular headlight is the mounting direction.

The completed projector and bracket assembly is installed into the rear of the headlamp housing. That differs from the later Toyota 86 / GT86 case, where the replacement projector arrangement is front-mounted.

This is exactly why we avoid assuming that all first-generation 86 headlights use the same bracket.

You can see the full structure and installation sequence in the 2012–2015 Toyota 86 / GT86 / Scion FR-S projector retrofit case.

The later car uses a different installation method, which we cover separately rather than mixing the two jobs together.

What about the factory xenon wiring?

In the documented factory xenon configuration, the original vehicle power can be retained without an additional decoder.

That does not mean the wiring should simply be connected without checking it.

Connector type and polarity should still be confirmed before final assembly.

It is especially important if the headlight has already been modified or replaced at some point in the car's life.

For retrofit shops, this is a good example of why "no decoder required" should be treated as a statement about a confirmed configuration, not a blanket rule for every FR-S or GT86.

Check clearance before closing the housing

A projector can fit the bracket and still create a problem elsewhere.

Before resealing the headlight, check the rear of the projector carefully.

Make sure there is enough room for:

  • the projector body
  • bulb or LED cooling components
  • wiring
  • rear cover
  • adjustment movement

This check is much easier to do while the housing is still open.

The projector should also be powered and tested before the lens goes back on.

At minimum, confirm low beam, high beam function and basic alignment.

A projector that is slightly rotated or sitting at the wrong height is far easier to correct now than after the headlight has been fully resealed.

Resealing and aiming are part of the retrofit

Once the mechanical and electrical work is confirmed, the lamp can be resealed.

Any old sealant that has become contaminated or uneven should be cleaned up so the lens can sit correctly in the channel.

After the headlight is back on the car, the job is not finished until the beam has been aimed.

The projector may be better than the original one, but poor aim can still produce a bad result.

This matters even more on a low sports car such as the 86, where incorrect vertical aim can easily create glare or reduce useful distance on the road.

When this retrofit makes sense

A projector retrofit is most worthwhile when the original headlight housing is still worth keeping.

If the lens, tabs and internal housing are in good condition, replacing the projector can update the optical system without changing the entire appearance of the car.

If the headlight is badly damaged, a complete replacement housing may make more sense.

The important thing is not to start with the assumption that every 2012–2015 car uses the same setup.

The Toyota 86 / GT86 headlight upgrade guide gives a broader look at when it makes sense to replace the projector, change the complete headlight or leave the OEM system alone.

For retrofit shops working on the factory xenon version shown here, the process is much simpler once the original RX350 projector, bracket points and wiring configuration have been confirmed.

Identify the headlight first, match the projector and bracket as one system, test everything while the housing is open, and only then close the lamp.
